In October of 2002, the Hartford Courant publishes a series of articles about the crisis of heroin use in Willimantic. The city has a disproportionate rate of heroin abuse for a small community, concentrated in Hotel Hooker, while the local police ignore open heroin use and prostitution. The reports garners so much attention, 60 Minutes does a feature on Willimantic's drug problem in June of 2003 and photographer Brad Clift is nominated for a Pulitzer prize.
