The Grandeur and Details of This Building

When completed, the Courthouse and Town Hall was a large structure with a grand entrance consisting of 14-foot-wide granite steps. The structure was built with 1.25 million bricks and the exterior was trimmed with Philadelphia pressed brick. The entrance hall utilized paneled ash ceilings along with a floor made of Munson granite from Massachusetts. The interior of the structure was completed with cypress paneling along with the cypress doors. The building has 152 windows which fill the building with plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Additionally, a large clock was donated to the construction by the son of Whiting Hayden, a prominent Willimantic mill owner and banker, James Hayden. The total cost of the building was $73,000 in 1895, which is equal to roughly 2.25 million in 2020.
