Willimantic and Culture

In 1910, leisure time led to a surge in societies and organizations in Willlimantic which reflected people's varied interests in a small-sized city of 10,831. Some of them were based on religion, gender, occupation, finances, and insurance. There were also Masonic and recreational societies and organizations. Local amenities included the library and a theater. It is also important to note that Willimantic had a temperance society as well.

This is especially relevant to examine since currently, we are not as connected as we used to be. In the beginning of the 20th century, physical gatherings seemed to be the way in which most people engaged in their interests. In 2023, over 100 years after the period of this exhibit, the majority is able to connect with each other via their electronic devices. One would think that since modern transportation makes travel easier, in-person gatherings would be more common. Yet, the current trend is the opposite and physical isolation is common practice now more than ever before.
