Conclusion
In researching for this project, I was able to get a glimpse into how education then was both similar and different compared to education today. A similiarity between education today and in 1910 is aqcuiring money for schools was not easy. However, unlike today, there were many more Willimantic residents teaching within Willimantic schools. It is common today in schools for their staff to not live in the town or district they work for. Another striking and interesting find I learned of in this research project was the uniqueness of some of the curriculum content. Part of the curriculum for students in 1910 included books that included topics such as manners, how to be polite at social functions, and the physiology of marriage. Students weren't only expected to learn the basic curriculum but also social norms as well.
If I had more time and resources for this project I would have liked to learn more about some of the students' experiences in the different schools during this time period in Willimantic. You can learn a lot about schools through reading all of the official documents but you can learn even more from the students who are attending those schools. I think that it would be interesing to see the pros and cons of the individual schools through the students' perspective. I also would have liked to have been able to see the different curriculum for each grade level and each of the subjects.
